A clutzy, ditzy bespectacled bookworm with seemingly no combat skills. She can't even swim. In the viewpoint and humor of the one who did the "English Adaptation", a fear of homosexuals, wondering if she is homosexual herself, and convinced that Kanu and Chouhi are lesbians who are attracted to her, was added to the English version. That isn't present in the original JPN version. Ryuubi is destined to be a great leader but is presently too timid and carefree to become one. However, she is still more than willing to do her best for her friends. She is best friends with Chouhi and possesses the most destructive dragon seen, which is so evil that it radiates enthropic energy and nearly made her disembowel herself before Ryomou, Chouhi, and Kanu managed to stop her, resulting in all of them being critically wounded. She seems unaware of this and is prone to occasional highly destructive out-bursts when her dragon rouses. These outbursts happen when Ryubi sees her friends get hurt in battle. Ukitsu alluded that Ryuubi shares Sonsaku's capacity to anticipate enemy moves

An odd girl with short blue hair and green eyes, a distinctive mole on her left cheek and a very strange history, mainly tied to her mysterious left-eye patch. Powerful and a B-rank, she is one of the Four Devas of Nanyo. She has a habit of wearing a blue miniskirted French maid outfit and specialises in submission wrestling moves, throws, and joint attacks, which she uses in conjunction with a pair of handcuffs she carries; she is also very proficient in making chi blasts. Her earlier life before she became a Toushi is unknown but is hinted as being tragic and painful. She, Teifu, and Saji have been best friends long before the start of the series. Ryomou is in love with Saji and cares for Teifu (who loves her). Ryomou has always fought for the fun of it and considers herself no one's woman. Presumably because of her dragon she has a minor split personality; one is fairly shy and normal and the other is psychosexual. Her psycho side is not nearly as bad as Ryubi, Sousou and Hakufu. Three years prior to the start of the series Ryomou fought Ryubi when her dragon had awakened and saved her life right before Ryubi attempted to rip her own heart out. In the process Ryubi's dragon possessed Ryomou's left-eye and now perfectly coexists with her. Its power even healed her completely after being mortally wounded and stabbed through the heart by Teni. No other characters seem to be in harmony with their dragons as much as Ryomou, but she still seals it with her eye-patch and is believed to be dying because of it. Very few are aware of this, and it is not stated whether she shares Ryubi's dragon or now has her own. While she has it, she is as powerful as the other Three Rulers. Her magical eye may be a reference to the Chinese idiom "To look at a person with a new eye" or reevaluate them or not to judge them by their appearance, an idiom attributed to Lu Meng who was as brilliant a scholar as he was a warrior.

Ryomou Shimei

anime version: Ryomou's anime incarnation is much more taciturn and serious than her manga self to the point of being almost unemotional. She is not shy or spoony and acts uninterested in relationships. In one scene she isn't even phased when Saji puts his hand down her shirt and gropes her. Her magatama is also shown as being silver in the first season, and by the second season she is arguably as strong as Myousai, though she retreats during their first battle in order to protect the Dragon Jade. She doesn't have a past relationship to Seito and Ryubi either. Instead her dragon appears to be her own, though how she got it is not known. She also appears to be closer to Hakufu than she does in the manga and goes out of her way to help the Nanyo leader whenever she can. She even went out on her own to find the Dragon Jade to save Hakufu. She was badly injured after being ambushed by Teni. Chou-un came to her rescue but Ryomou awakened her own dragon, defeating Teni. Chou-un was able to knock out Ryomou, bandage her and return her to Nanyo after stealing the Dragon Jade. Chou-un stated that if Ryomou was not injured during the awakening of her dragon, Ryomou would have been able to defeat her. Ryomou recovered to full strength and played a part in the Battle of Chibi, defeating Myosai. She is now working along with Hakufu in a cosplay cafe, dressed as a cat maid (Ryomou even wears a heart-shaped eye-patch). In the third season it's revealed that she and Hakufu lost that job and numerous others because of Ryomou's clumsiness and beating on customers. Ryomou's dragon unlike Hakufu's did not go back into hibernation after Chi Bi and it is revealed to be killing her.

Teni

A psychotic powerful archer and assassin barely in her teen years. She has either Christian or Catholic beliefs and believes Shiba-I to be the Madonna and worships her unquestioningly. She was raped by her father as a child, but she killed him in self-defence. She spent her early school life being abused mostly by most of the other children. She learned how to fight, kill, and play the guitar from Shiba-I, whom she adores. She tried to assassinate Ryomou and retrieve the Gyokuji but Ryomou's dragon woke up and ripped off her right arm, nearly killing her during the process. She is currently in a coma. She possessed a Hyakuhekitou called the 100-Swing Blade Dragon hidden inside an electric guitar.

Ayumu's first friend at Nishidate High School, she soon became an ex-friend due to her bullying Ayumu, as well as being somewhat of a predator to Miki Hatori. She is obsessed with her boyfriend, Katsumi Sako, and became suicidal when they broke up, even though the breakup turned out to be short-term. Manami was once bullied when she was younger, because she was the one who had caught Katsumi's eye in middle school (those he rejected became jealous and took out their frustration on her), but is now the bully towards anyone who she feels deserves it, as she was behind Miki's bullying after an incident at camp. She is a very sexual girl and uses that to her advantage, getting boys to do some of her dirty work. She is extremely manipulative and spoiled; as the daughter of a rich CEO, she uses her powers and conceit to force others to do her will, usually by blackmail or threats. Her manipulations allow her to use emotions as a weapon; she appears by turns the innocent "good girl" (in front of teachers, her parents, or other people of authority), the martyr (when her bullying draws the attention of other classmates and teachers), or the predator (when tormenting Ayumu). People tend to take her side, even through her lies, in large part because of how she conducts herself in confrontational situations. She turns all of Nishidate High (except Miki, Sonoda and later the class because of Sonoda) against Ayumu for a rather extreme reason: soon after she and Ayumu become friends, a misunderstanding arises, in which Katsumi--who is as manipulative as Manami--starts to pursue Ayumu and instead tells Manami that Ayumu is pursuing him, calling her "a mess." Manami speaks in the third person, calling herself by her nickname, "Mana"

Manami's boyfriend. He has a fetish for bondage and keeps a scrapbook of the girls he has raped. When Ayumu comes across this book, he molests her and makes her his slave. However, his evil plans for her are thwarted because he has an abusive father who beats him to ensure his future relationship with Manami (both of their fathers are rich CEO's of famous companies). Around large groups of people he acts polite and sweet; but when it suits him to show his real self, that self is manipulative and abusive. He stalks Ayumu, tries to make her call him "Master" for blackmail purposes, and even completely tricks Ayumu's mother into thinking he is a nice person. Early in the series, is revealed that he did not enter Nishikō of his own free will--his father had made him enroll because Manami, who was good for the reputation of the Sako name, would be a student there (and while it has not been elaborated upon, the relationship he and Manami began at Tatsuki Middle School might also have been the work of their fathers). Because of this, Katsumi tries to break up with her, and is successful once; while they do get back together in both the manga and the drama, Katsumi later in the seris is shown explicitly going out with the Homeroom teacher, Toda-sensei. (too make sure Manami doesn't get into trouble with her bullying, attacks, and other stuff) In the manga, it seems the tables have turned on Katsumi as he is now under threat of Manami's new "boyfriend" Akira, who beats Katsumi and leaves him humiliated, much like Katsumi's treatment of Ayumu. Not long after that, he is seen giving money to Akira after receiving, presumably, a threatening phone call. Despite his good grades, he placed third (Hatori came in first) in the class exams due to his injuries.

Sonoda-kun first appears in Volume 6 of the manga after bumping into Ayumu, where he immediately notices she is distressed. Soon after, when Manami and her friends are trying to take Ayumu into the bathroom (likely to inflict more torture), Sonoda stops them and tells them off, and with the help several other students is able to back the girls off. Afterwards he reveals he has his own past experiences with being bullied, which lead him to stand up for Ayumu, though he insists that it isn't for her sake; rather, he is trying to erase his own pain by helping her. In Volume 7 he runs into Akira Karino, Manami's new boyfriend, and right away attempts to run from his sight, indicating that Akira was his main tormentor in his past. He later In volume 8 comes to Ayumu and Hatori's rescue when Manami's new "toy" kidnaps them. His overall gentle nature in the face of all he's been through complements his passion for gardening; his favorite flower, the sunflower, has a great deal of emotional meaning to him, as they are able to grow tall and free and "reach toward the sun" in a way he is not yet able to. Later in the manga, Ayumu and Sonoda appear to have developed romantic feelings for each other.

A high school student who consistently struggles on tests despite being very intelligent. She is a student at Nishidate High School, After the dissolution of her friendship with Shii-chan at the very end of middle school, she has difficulties fitting into high school life and resorts to self-harm in order to cope. She lives with her single middle-class mom and younger sister, Akane, in a company house When Katsumi Sako begins to threaten her, Ayumu tells the whole school and her own mother what he is doing--only to be totally ignored. Despite these and many other hardships, however (not the least of which is severe bullying by Manami and her followers), her friendship with Miki Hatori--one of only a few students not bullying Ayumu--gives her the strength she needs to stand up for herself and to stop self-harming.

A girl in Ayumu's class. Strikingly beautiful, she is usually the top student of her school, and has a quiet willpower and strength. She can relate to what Ayumu is going through. She, like Ayumu, is the victim of teasing by Manami and her gang; but, unlike Ayumu, she does not let it bother her, at least outwardly. She is very independent and mature, and has been known to work multiple shady jobs to make her own way, such as working behind the counter at the risqué Rainbow Café and being a bunny girl at clubs (in the drama, she only works at Rainbow Café, and her being a bunny girl is only hinted at). Like most of her classmates, Miki is about fifteen or sixteen, but she stretches the truth when trying to find work, saying instead that she is nineteen. She has a "sweetheart" in her home town. She and Ayumu are best friends.

Sousuke Sagara is the main character of the series. He grew up in Helmajistan, a region in Afghanistan that was caught up in political strife. At age 8, he joined a guerrilla movement to survive, and eventually found his way into Mithril. Sousuke only knows military life, so he is suspicious of everything out of the ordinary. He also has a tough time integrating into high school life, as his social skills are not quite up to par. Sousuke can be quite insensitive at times, for example in volume 7 he bought a pregnancy test while out with Kaname and did not understand what was wrong.

Kaname Chidori is the second protagonist of the series. She is the most popular girl at school - the kind of girl everyone looks up to, but no boy wants as their girlfriend, as one character put it. She's very much the loud mouth, speak your mind kind of girl - a trait she picked up when she studied abroad. Still, Kaname has a softer side - that little girl that has a crush on Sousuke if he'd just for once open up emotionally. Until then, she feels like she must protect him from the harsh, cruel world of high school - a place where he doesn't quite fit in.

Ryofu's best friend since childhood and also her lesbian lover. She was a C-rank with great potential. While Ryofu was battling Toutaku, Chinkyuu knocked out Kaku to prevent her from interfering. Kaku got her revenge when she caught Chinkyuu stealing the Gyokuji and got Rikaku to rape her. When Chinkyuu recovered from her injuries, she saves Ryofu from being killed by Myosai. However, she realises that Ryofu is moments away from dying due to her illness. Since she was loyal and in love with Ryofu, Chinkyuu decides to stay by her friend's side and commits suicide with her instead of surrendering to Sousou.

Versailles (known as Versailles -Philharmonic Quintet- in the United States) is a Japanese metal band formed in 2007. It is composed of several notable figures in the visual kei scene. Versailles' key characteristics are their renaissance-esque costumes, dueling guitar sounds and heavy but melodic arrangements.

Kanon Wakeshima is a Japanese singer and cellist Produced by Mana, Wakeshima debuted under the DefSTAR Records label on May 28, 2008 with the single "Still Doll", the ending theme for the anime adaptation of the manga series Vampire Knight. She also provided the voice for a maid that appears in the eighth episode of the series.

Kalafina is a Japanese band formed by composer Yuki Kajiura in 2007 to mainly perform theme songs for the anime Kara no Kyoukai. The band debuted in January 2008 with two original members from Yuki Kajiura's FictionJunction project, Wakana Ootaki and Keiko Kubota (not confirmed until the first Dream Port 2008 concert held on April 29, 2008). In May 2008, two vocalists Maya and Hikaru, who had been chosen from an audition of 30,000 participants held by Sony Music Japan and Yuki Kajiura, were confirmed as the final members of Kalafina. Kalafina performed in America (Boston, MA) for the first time on May 23, 2009 as guest singers for the annual Anime Boston convention.
